Natalie
I’m Natalie, a Graduate Software Developer at We Are CORTEX with a BSc in Computer Graphics, Imaging and Multimedia from the University of East Anglia.
I started at CORTEX in September 2021, a few months after graduating. The company culture was the main aspect that drew me to accept my role as I was inspired by the friendly and welcoming nature of everyone, I spoke to during the recruitment process. When applying for jobs, I was keen on looking for a company that exhibited a caring attitude towards its employees, and the culture at CORTEX definitely fulfils that need. I was also looking for opportunities to be autonomous and innovative, which has been encouraged since my first day working at CORTEX. I have worked on many projects as part of the development team that has not only helped me enhance my software development skills but also my communication and creativity as well.
Thus, I would encourage any graduate keen on working in an innovative and encouraging environment to look at working for CORTEX.
Josh
I finished education at Barton Peveril College studying Computing, Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Biology. I was not interested going to university as I wanted to get into work as soon as possible. This led to me applying for an apprenticeship with CORTEX. I chose CORTEX because they were a small company that offered the opportunities that I was looking for.
Since starting in September 2014 I have been on several projects for both customers and internal projects. This has involved large networking changes to our internal networks, building new CORTEX platforms for customers and maintaining existing solutions.
I have grown to be a more mature and independent worker since joining CORTEX. I have finished and progressed from an apprentice and I now mentor new apprentices. This has further developed my professional and technical skills.
Due to the size of the business and the staff that are already working at CORTEX, it is a lovely environment to work in. Therefore I would recommend working for CORTEX based on this as you will always feel a part of the team and valued by everyone.
Joe
I’m Joe, and I have a BEng in Electronic Engineering. I started at CORTEX in the summer of 2014 and moved to Southampton straight after University to join the Projects team.
The company was quite different back then, but I settled in very quickly with the team and the company due to the friendly atmosphere. Being new to the company and industry I felt that I asked a lot of stupid questions, but one thing which surprised me was how everyone makes time for you (whatever their role or department).
Having been here for a while I’ve grown a lot and feel like I’m constantly learning which is something that keeps me interested. I’ve also had the chance to travel for the job (2 projects in Philadelphia, several in Amsterdam and Utrecht) and take on a wide variety of projects ranging from Health Insurance Claims to Server Provisioning and some ISP management.
There’s also an opportunity to help out with other departments, including Sales and Pre-Sales engagements such as Proof of Concepts for clients, providing feedback on new features the Development team are working on and other internal work.
As a team, we get the chance to think of internal initiatives we want to do which have also given me a great learning opportunity, and aside from that I’ve spent time learning Azure, SQL. Outside of work, I managed to create a simple Alexa skill to call CORTEX and interact with Philips Hue lightbulbs. Sadly this doesn’t have much of a business use case!
On the social aspect, we have a variety of events such as sports, board games, BBQs. My favourites are Karting and 5 a side, as well as going to the pub at 5pm on a Friday. I think it’s a great company with a friendly atmosphere, which is probably why I’ve been here since Uni!
